        An understanding of the terms used to describe position and location in medical terminology is fundamental.  Take a look at the list below and then test your skills with the quiz.

anterior = front

posterior = back

ventral = front

dorsal = back

medial = middle

lateral = toward the sides

para = near

superficial = toward the surface

deep = away from the surface

superior = above

inferior = below

cephalo = toward the head

caudal = toward the feet

retro = behind

proximal = near the attachment point

distal = away from the attachment point

peripheral = away from the center

recumbent = lying down

supine = lying on the back

prone = lying on the stomach
